The hip property has now opened, featuring sleek, modern rooms, and an impressive bar and restaurant line-up.
After the inevitable delays, the long-awaited W Amsterdam, the city’s latest luxury hotel, is finally open (although the spa and fitness centre won’t be ready until early next year). The property occupies an enviable location—practically on Dam Square—and is set in two monumental city buildings: the old KAS bank and a former government office complex.
Both have been fully refurbished in impressive fashion, combining high-impact contemporary design with traditional comforts. There are 238 rooms and 23 suites, including three plush WOW suites and two apartment-like E-WOW (“e” for extreme) suites rocking an Austin Powers vibe—complete with circular beds and other space-age trimmings.
The hotel aims to become the city’s next major hot spot, and as such boasts not one but two restaurants by Yossi Eliyahoo, fresh from his trio of recent Amsterdam successes: Momo, Izakaya and The Butcher. At the W Amsterdam, Eliyahoo has done it again, with the elegant Duchess (pictured, top; on the ground floor, serving French-Italian cuisine) and the spectacular Mr. Porter, a rooftop venue styled as a steakhouse (serving much more besides), where the views are every bit as special as the food.
Also coming soon to the hotel complex: XBank, a seriously stylish, two-floor shopping venue combining high fashion and iconic Dutch design.
