There’s more to Dutch food than pancakes and Edam cheese, but don’t take our word for it. Sample the signature dishes of the city’s best restaurants and chefs for yourself at Taste of Amsterdam, which takes over the city’s Amstel Park from June 4 to 7.
The signature dishes from Amsterdam’s best-loved eateries are on offer, including samples from Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Amsterdam—which will offer selections from their special 10th Anniversary Menu—and Stefan van Sprang’s Michelin-starred Aan de Poel. Don’t miss Ali Ocakbasi’s well-loved Turkish mezze dishes and the spicy Indonesian flavors of Blauw, especially their saté.
But it’s not all about eating—you can learn about different wines with sommelier-led tasting sessions, watch theatrical cooking presentations by international chefs, and even put your own skills to the test by entering the Masterchef challenge. Kids’ activities include decorating cupcakes and making their own chef’s toques.
A farmers’ market showcasing the best locally produced Dutch edible goodies is ripe for gifts or souvenirs. Keep your eye out for artisanal Dutch liqueurs and beers, stroopwafels (the addictive national cookie) and Dutch Drop (the country’s liquorice candy, available in a bewildering range of variations). There’s music and dancing, too—if you’re not too full.
