As Amsterdam is quickly finding out, you can have too much of a good thing. Cycling is so popular there—58 percent of locals use their bikes daily and 43 percent commute via bike—that the Dutch capital is facing a logistical nightmare. They’ve run out of space to park the city’s estimated 880,000 two-wheelers.
The proposed solution? Store them underwater.
Last week, Amsterdam’s mayor, Eberhard van der Laan announced a proposal to construct a subaquatic garage near the central train station with room for 7,000 bicycles. It’s just one of several ways the city plans to add 21,500 bike spaces by 2030. Others include building two new floating islands to house bikes, as well as increased stacked parking in the city center.
