SCAD FASH will focus on fashion and design, and offer special exhibitions and events for both students and the public.
The Savannah College of Art and Design has unveiled the brand spanking new SCAD FASH, a preeminent museum exploring fashion and design in a repurposed building on the school’s Peachtree Street campus. With 10,000 square feet of exhibition space, the museum will host shows, films, lectures, and more for both students and the public.
Kicking off the grand opening is the inaugural exhibition “Oscar de la Renta” (through December 31), a collection of garments from the mid-1960s to the present, including Fall 2015 garments from Peter Copping, Oscar de la Renta’s new creative director. Taylor Swift, Oprah Winfrey, and Caroline Kennedy have loaned gowns and dresses for the show, which also includes the documentary “Ovation for Oscar,” made by SCAD alumni and students. The film premiered this year at the Cannes Film Festival, and this past spring, Andre Leon Talley curated a smaller show on Oscar de la Renta at the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah.
SCAD FASH features high-design touches such as French oak flooring in is stylish film salon, used for screenings and events. There’s a fashion resource room for the presentation of techniques and materials, collections storage, and an additional 27,000 square feet of academic and studio space on the museum’s perimeter.
For Laurie Ann Farrell, executive director of SCAD museums and exhibitions, this is a chance to flex some muscles in an expansive, flexible space, perfect for such upcoming shows as “Art x Fashion,” an examination of collaborations between designers and visual artists. “Atlanta has become the fashion capitol of the south, and SCAD FASH is part of that evolution,” she says.
Later this month on its main campus, SCAD presents the annual Savannah Film Festival from October 24 to October 31; this year, Meg Ryan premieres her directorial debut, Ithica.
