A Colombian master tries his hand at poster design.
Colombian painter and sculptor Fernando Botero, he of the ample, exaggerated figures depicted in flat, bright colors, has created a promotional poster for the upcoming Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy. The ad, featuring a dancing couple in full-on Boterismo, speaks to the organizers' hope to restore a bit of luster to the festival, which in its early days occupied a more central position in Italian culture.
To that end, 48 plastic sculptures from Botero’s private collection, of ballerinas, women reclining with fruit, men on horses with whips—you know, Botero stuff—will be displayed in the Spoleto Town Hall for the duration of the festival, which runs from June 26 to July 12.
Musical offerings organized by artistic director Giorgio Ferrara include a new production of Mozart’s “Così Fan Tutte,” a concert of Sufi music from Karima Skalli and the Asil Ensemble, and selections of Schubert and Brahms from the Fiesole Music School’s Italian Youth Orchestra.
Two Worlds 2015 will also see the premier of “Letter to a Man, a one-man based on the diaries of dancer and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky, performed in a 19th-century theater restored by Carla Fendi.
