If you have been wanting to visit the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, but needed to save your money for lunch at the Hello Kitty café, now you can visit the museum and have your Keroppi-shaped cake, too.
On Saturday, January 30, Los Angeles is throwing open the doors of more than two dozen museums and cultural sites for the city’s annual Free-for-All Day.
That means that visitors who normally have to reach into their wallets to explore the collections at LACMA and the Natural History Museum can spend the day museum hopping free of charge.
While free admission doesn’t mean you can suddenly get access to LACMA’s sold out Rain Room (or any specially ticketed exhibits at the sites), it does mean you can tour the ancient forest at Descanso Gardens, check out Matthew Barney at MOCA, and take the kids to the Zimmer Childrens' Museum without spending a dime.
Other museums taking part in the Free-for-All include the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits, The Museum of Tolerance, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Museum of Latin American Art, both campuses of the Getty, and The Broad, and many more of the city’s cultural offerings. Parking costs are full price, but if you want to forgo that expense, the event has partnered with Metro to offer discounts to riders who want to hop a train or bus to visit the participating museums.
If you can’t make it to Los Angeles on the weekend of the 30th, keep in mind that many museums in L.A. are always free meaning visitors can save all their money for Hello Kitty snacks.
