Miami is a world of water, ideally suited for the annual Miami Underwater Festival, running this weekend at the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science. This year’s theme, “Coasts, Reefs, and Open Oceans,” will make for a great celebration of all things aquatic.
On Saturday and Sunday, June 13 and June 14, the Museum of Science will feature underwater films from BLUE on Tour, part of the BLUE Ocean Film Festival & Conservation Summit. The Smithsonian Latino Center runs the program Sunday, featuring Sonia Ortega, a noted marine biologist with the National Science Foundation.
Throughout the weekend, and the rest of the summer, the museum will have “Under the Sea” on view, an exhibit drawn from the 2015 University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science Underwater Photography Contest (pictured).
Next year, the museum will move into a new high-tech, 250,000-square-foot facility in downtown Miami’s Museum Park. The space is designed by Grimshaw Architects and features a planetarium and the Knight Learning Center. According to Gillian Thomas, president and CEO of the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, you ain’t seen nothing yet. “At Museum Park, our Living Core Aquarium will feature every ecosystem in South Florida,” she says. “The Miami Underwater Festival is just a small taste of the future.”
