Profession: Designers
Destination: Miami
“It reminds us of Mumbai,” says accessories designer Ranjana Khan of Miami, the city that she and her husband, fashion designer Naeem Khan, recently adopted as their third home. “The bright colors, the chaos, everyone speaking different languages, even the traffic!” The couple has roots—ancestral and aesthetic—in India’s entertainment hub, where they had a great, big, Bollywood-style wedding in 1984, after moving to New York City. From their downtown Manhattan studio, he creates glamorous dresses in handmade fabrics with ornate patterns, while she makes intricately detailed jewelry and accessories; in the past, she has collaborated with other designers, such as Alber Elbaz of Lanvin (we have Ranjana to thank for that famous tulle-covered pearl). After 30 years in New York, however, the Khans began to miss palm trees, sunshine, and balmy afternoons—and so they started weekending in Miami. “We just throw on our flip-flops and go,” says the couple. They love to browse the shops, eat fresh seafood, take long walks on South Beach, and wander in the Design District near Biscayne Boulevard. Plus, says Ranjana, “it takes us less time to get there than the Hamptons.”
Adrienne Arsht Center The couple takes in the ballet at the Cesar Pelli–designed performing arts complex in the Design District.
Garcia’s Seafood Grille & Fish Market For crabs and fried plantains, they head to this unassuming spot on the water. Dinner for two $50.
Lanvin When in need of a dress, Ranjana shops at the French fashion house’s brand-new boutique at Bal Harbour Shops.
The Standard The duo lunches at the hotel’s Mediterranean-inspired Lido restaurant—and spends the afternoon by the freshwater swimming pool. Lunch for two $28.
