Singapore Brings 50th Anniversary Festivities to NYC 2015 Suhaimi Abdullah

As the country honors its jubilee year, a slew of celebrations land in New York City this month.

Singapore hit a bit milestone this year, marking its 50th birthday on August 9, and the celebrations are ongoing for the jubilee year. If you missed the big bash the country threw in its homeland, consider the festivities landing in New York City this month.

We’ve highlighted a few favorites, but you can read the full list of events here, and plot where you want to experience the Lion City in a stateside location.  

Action-Packed Entertainment

Some of the world’s best and fastest names in racing come to town for the 2015 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix. From September 18th to 20th enjoy three action-packed days of racing, while acts like Bon Jovi, Maroon 5, and Pharrell Williams entertain the crowds at night.

LAVO Italian Restaurant and Nightclub on the Upper East Side will play host to one of Singapore's more popular artists, DJ Lincey, on September 26. DJ Lincey will be in New York taking a short break from his residency at the famous Singapore nightclub, Zouk.

Culinary Delights

New York City’s top kitchens, including DB Bistro, Market Table, The Clam and The Meatball Shop, will create famous Singapore dishes and cocktails from September 18 to 27 for Singapore Restaurant Week. New Yorkers can also experience Singaporean culinary delights with a hawker (street food) pop-up truck in the Flatiron, September 23 to 27.

Danny Meyer’s popular burger joint Shake Shack will unveil the first-ever Singapore-inspired shake at its Madison Square Park location, starting September 24.

Bergdorf Goodman will offer Singapore Art & Feast from September 20 to 27, when acclaimed Singapore photographer John Clang puts his touch on the store’s famous window displays. The department store’s signature restaurant, BG Restaurant, will highlight local Singapore dishes made by a to-be-announced guest chef from Singapore that week.

Arts and Culture

Singapore: Inside Out is a traveling showcase of Singapore’s creative talents, designed specifically for the 50th Golden Jubilee. Curated by award-winning architect and artist Randy Chan, it will be on display in Madison Square Park from September 23 to 27, following crowd-pleasing tours in Beijing and London.

Finally, head to the Lower East Side for a 10-day art festival, “Something to Write Home About,” celebrating the works of U.S.-based Singapore artists, which will be showcased at La MaMa. In a series called “Something to Write Home About,” short films, visual arts and theater will all be on display from the 12 to 22.
