Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group kicks off Drink Pink today, a month-long celebration of spring and its culinary mascot, rosé wine. Now in its second year, the event demystifies the rose-hued vino while toasting the change in weather.
It’s a misunderstood wine often mistaken for sweet white zinfandel, but it’s got much more to offer, especially when sitting on a patio, says Sabato Sagaria, chief restaurant officer and master sommelier for USHG. “The most important question when drinking rosé is, do you like it or not?” he says.
All 10 of the group’s New York City restaurants will put their twist on a selection of rosés available by the glass and bottle. The Modern pays homage to the Museum of Modern Art’s international energy with a widely global list, including a sparkler from Tasmania, while the casual pizza spot Marta keeps it rustic with a Cleto Chiarli Lambrusco from Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. Gramercy Tavern balances its options between old world and new.
Enthusiasts can hop from spot to spot, sampling the range until the end of May, and track their progress with the hashtag #DrinkPink and the handle @ushgnyc. Drink Pink also supports the Bed-Stuy Campaign Against Hunger, with $1 from every glass and $4 from every bottle benefitting the cause. Last year, the restaurants collectively donated more than $12,000 to the campaign.
