Through bolder stage productions, the Metropolitan Opera is bolstering its claim at opera’s forefront. This fall, the Met introduces three directors from spoken theater: Luc Bondy stages Tosca (through Oct. 17); Richard Eyre directs Carmen with mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca in the title role (Dec. 31); and Patrice Chéreau, once the enfant terrible and now a grand seigneur of opera direction, makes his American debut with Janácek’s From the House of the Dead (Nov. 12).
