Can’t wait for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to re-open in 2016? Get a sneak peek of the museum’s new collection when its American Icons exhibit opens at the Grand Palais in Paris this April.
Marking the international debut of SFMOMA On the Go—a series of exhibitions and programming while the museum is closed for construction—the show will feature 50 paintings and sculptures from 14 celebrated American artists of the postwar era. Highlights include works by big names like Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Agnes Martin, and Chuck Close, in addition to pieces by Ellsworth Kelly and Alexander Calder, whose works were both heavily influenced by their time living and working in France.
SFMOMA’s Third Street space has been closed since 2013, but the traveling exhibition gives audiences, “a preview of the quality and depth of art on view when we open our expanded building in 2016,” said Neal Benezra, director of the museum. “American Icons offers a glimpse of SFMOMA’s future.”
