There’s about to be one more hotel for book lovers in the world.
Book and Bed is about to become the destination for literature-loving travelers visiting Tokyo. The library-themed hostel will open its doors on November 5 and early photos reveal it to be a reading fanatic’s paradise lined with bookshelves filled will hundreds of English and Japanese titles.
If you’ve ever dreamed of sleeping in a bookstore, now’s your chance as some of the beds at Book and Bed are built behind the bookcases, so guests can curl up with a tome in their (very) cozy bunks to read late into the night.
While that may sound charming, be aware that Book and Bed is definitely a hostel, not a hotel, and the capsule-like sleeping quarters are only semi-private and for “accommodation,” as opposed to comfort. According to the website, that’s entirely by design, because the property has different priorities: “There are no comfortable mattresses, fluffy pillows nor lightweight and warm down duvets. What we do offer is an experience.”
While Book and Bed’s sleeping arrangements may not appeal to everyone, it could be a great way to burn through Japan’s infamous jet lag. The hostel also offers a day rate to weary travelers who may want to catnap during sightseeing.
Located in the Ikebukuro neighborhood near Tokyo’s Sunshine Aquarium and the wild indoor theme park, Namco Namja Town, the hostel is just a quick subway ride from popular tourist destinations like the Meiji Shrine, Shinshoji Temple, or the Kawaii Monster Café.
Of course, at Book and Bed, if you just want to stay in the hotel and read, no one will judge you, especially considering the books at this bookstore-themed hostel aren’t actually for sale. Guests are free to devour books for the duration of their stay, but the stories must stay in the hostel after checkout.
