Temple of Liber Pater

TIME : 2016/2/16 18:01:54

East of the Curia is the Temple of Liber Pater, which was never rebuilt after the AD 365 earthquake. It is marked by five columns in light sandstone on a high podium overlooking the monumental heart of ancient Sabratha. It was once flanked on three sides by a double colonnade of sandstone columns.

Dedicated to one of the most revered gods of Roman Africa and second only in importance to the Capitoleum in the hierarchy of temples in Roman Sabratha, this temple sat atop an elevated platform that was reached via a wide staircase. It was constructed in the 2nd century AD on the site of an earlier temple. Only the column bases and two of the columns are original.
