The Sanctuary of Demeter and Kore, an unusual circular structure, was the scene of a riotous, women-only, annual celebration and feast. As part of the festivities, the women of Cyrene proceeded from here to the Temple of Demeter, which is outside the city walls and visible in the distance from the House of Jason Magnus. The statues represent goddesses of fertility.
The cavities alongside the statues of the seated goddesses (3rd century BC) were used for offerings to the goddesses; the standing figures were added by the Romans.
