The magical Masoala (mash-wala) Peninsula is the site of a 2100-sq-km national park containing one of the best primary rainforests in the country. It also encompasses three protected marine areas: Tampolo Marine Park on the peninsula’s southwestern coast, Cap Masoala Marine Park at the tip of the peninsula and Tanjona Marine Park on the southeastern coast.
The reserve is only accessible by boat, or on foot if you are trekking. Check at the MNP office or at hotels in Maroantsetra for boats to hire and guides.
