Musée de la Gendarmerie Nationale
Exhibits cannons, police uniforms, a vintage taxi-brousse, and an enormous bunch of dried marijuana.

Place de Colonne
A monument to those killed in the 1947 uprising against the French, this plaza is in a sad state of disrepair.

Jardin d’Andolaho
A small park in the Haute-Ville where a hira gasy (traditional folk performance) is held every Sunday in winter.

Place Bien Aimé
At Place Bien Aimé, youll find the remains of a once grand park; a dozen magnificent banyan trees weep before a crumbling colonial mansion.

Lac Vert
The hike to the pretty Lac Vert is the longest circuit in the park (nine hours in total), and takes in all the main sights in the parks eastern half.

Perte des Rivières
A massive rock chasm into which three of the park’s rivers plunge during the rainy season (they emerge 20km later in the Mozambique Channel).

Ambondrona
On a small bay just north of Madirokely, Ambondrona is more tranquil than its southern neighbours, with lovely views of the mainland hills across the sea.

Bazary Be
Tamatave’s colourful Bazary Be sells fruit, vegetables, spices, handicrafts and beautiful bouquets of flowers (should you feel the need to brighten up your hotel room).

Endemika
About halfway down the southern road, just before Vohilava, this small private zoo and botanical garden showcases regional flora and fauna. It takes about an hour to see.

Canyon des Rats
Around 17km north of town, Canyon des Rats is a traditional burial area with some hard-to-see lemurs in residence. Often combined on a hiking expedition with Canyon des Makis.

Baobab Tree
At the T-junction with Ave de France, there is an enormous baobab tree (circumference, 21m!) thought to be well over 700 years old. It is considered fady (taboo) to touch it.

Fort Manda
The ruins of this 19th-century Merina fort, built for Radama I, are about 500m north of Foulpointe. Its walls, which are 8m high and 6m thick in places, are made from coral, sand and eggs.

Grotte dAndrafiabe
In the western half of Réserve Spéciale Ankarana, the focus is on three sets of caves, Grotte Squelette, Grotte Cathédrale and Grotte d’Andrafiabe, which you can visit through a subterranean circuit.

Fabrique de Papier Antaimoro
This workshop showcases the production of a unique kind of paper, made from the bark of a local bush, which has flowers pressed into it. Antaimoro cards, envelopes, and picture frames are all for sale.

La Reine de lIsalo
If you like finding figures in stone, La Reine de l’Isalo sits about 3km south of the museum, on the left side of the road. Its cool once you spot it, but youll probably need someone to point it out.
