Malawi’s National Museum has a couple of gems, including a royal ceremonial stool dating back to the 16th century, and a fascinating display on Gule Wamkulu – an important traditional dance for the Chewa. Lying in the museum grounds are a number of beautiful, rusty relics of Malawi’s bygone transport age including an old locomotive dating back to 1904, a decrepit City of Blantyre fire engine and an old Nyasaland Bus.
The museum is midway between Blantyre and Limbe, a 500m walk from the Chichiri Shopping Mall. Take a minibus headed for Limbe and ask to be let off at the museum.
