At Domaine du Grand Hazier youll also find La Vanilleraie, where you can see vanilla preparation and drying processes and also purchase vanilla pods. The manager speaks English.

Anciens Magasins Aubinais
This massive colonial building made of stone was constructed in the 1830s as a theatre but was used as a warehouse. Its neo-classical in style. Today it houses various shops.

Maison Martin Valliamé
Worth a look is Maison Martin Valliamé, a handsome colonial villa dating from 1925, northeast of the centre. Guided tours in French are available from 10am to 4pm on the hour.

Maison des Vins du Chai de Cilaos
You can learn more about Cilaos wine at the Maison des Vins du Chai de Cilaos. A short film (in French) is followed by a wine tasting session. Take home a bottle from about €13.

Old Courthouse
The old courthouse beside the clock tower will appeal to fans of Creole architecture, as will the colonial buildings that are scattered along Francis Rachel and Albert Sts.

The idyllic little beach of Anse Soleil is a pocket-sized paradise where you can pause for lunch; theres a beach restaurant . Its accessible via a secondary road (its signposted).

Bananaland
Just north of Piton Ste-Rose is this family-run operation where you can visit a banana plantation and buy various banana products, including jam and cakes. Everything is homemade and organic.

Musée dHistoire Naturelle
Go eye to eye with lemurs and other stuffed specimens in this museum located in the Jardin de lÉtat. Besides impressive lemurs, youll see a good insect and bird collection on the 1st floor.

Maison Kichenin
This perfectly preserved Creole mansion was built in the 1790s and is considered one of the oldest of its kind in St-Denis. The well-proportioned fountain in the garden is a highlight.

Clock Tower
The focal point of the city centre is this downsized replica of the clock tower on Londons Vauxhall Bridge. The replica was brought to Victoria in 1903 when the Seychelles became a crown colony.

Aquarium de la Réunion
In the modern Port de Plaisance complex, the quite engaging Aquarium de la Réunion houses a series of excellent underwater displays, including tanks with lobsters, barracudas, groupers and small sharks.

Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception
This imposing cathedral is noteworthy for its elegant portal and colonnaded facade. The building to the left of the cathedral is the Domus – its the priests residence and a national monument.

Main Market
If youre in St-Pierre on a Saturday morning, be sure to browse around the joyous, thriving main market, which sprawls along the seafront at the west end of Blvd Hubert-Delisle – a staple of local life.

Carnegie Library
Next to the town hall, the stone building with the distinctive neoclassical porch houses the municipal Carnegie Library. Its collection includes rare books on Mauritius dating back to the 18th century.

Government House
Government House is a beautiful French colonial structure dating from 1738, although it was added to later. Outside it stands a typically solemn statue of Queen Victoria in full we are not amused mode.

Anse Marron
At the southern tip of the island, little-known Anse Marron is a hidden morsel of tranquillity. The fact that this fantastically wild beach can only be reached on foot adds to its wonderful sense of remoteness.
