Taking pride of place in the centre of town is the Anglican church, with its renovated facade and elegant tower.

Ambling down Ave de la Victoire, youll come across the fairly unassuming, Tuscan-style Cathédrale de St-Denis.

Palais Rontaunay
Built in 1854, the much-photographed Palais Rontaunay is a bourgeois villa which has preserved the elegant style of the 19th century.

St Louis Cathedral
More austere, but also busier than St James Cathedral, St Louis Cathedral dates from 1932 and is popular with the Chinese community.

Surya Oudaya Sangam
Surya Oudaya Sangam, located at the west end of town, is dedicated to Shiva. Visitors are welcome but shoes should be removed before entering.

Lighthouse
Next to the tourist office, the small lighthouse – the only one on the island – is worth a gander. It was built in 1845. Its no longer in operation.

Anse Takamaka
The gently curving Anse Takamaka is a gorgeous strand for walking unfettered on white sand and gaping at sunsets. Facilities include Batistas bar-restaurant.

Anse Patates
At the northern tip of the island, this beach is alluring but lacks the wow factor. Its a great place for a picnic, though, and has some good snorkelling.

Chapelle Front de Mer
Notable religious buildings in Ste-Suzanne include the Chapelle Front de Mer, an ornate Tamil temple built on a pebbly beach north of town (its unsigned).

St James Cathedral
Inaugurated in 1850, St James is the oldest Anglican church in Mauritius, and has a peaceful, wood-panelled interior with plaques commemorating local worthies.

Shiv Kalyan Vath Mandir is a vividly coloured Tamil temple thats older than Grand Baies other temple, Surya Oudaya Sangam. Remove your shoes before entering.

Natural History Museum
The Natural History Museum is worth a quick visit to learn about the islands geology, fauna and flora. The upstairs section is devoted to marine life.

LArtothèque
This contemporary art gallery hosts changing exhibitions of works by local artists and those from neighbouring countries. Its housed in a handsome pale-yellow villa.

Observatoire Astronomique
The area is ideal for stargazing. The Observatoire astronomique offers stargazing programs from 9pm to midnight. Its best to call ahead to confirm the program is on.
