The jewel of iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Kosi Bay features a string of four lakes starting from an estuary lined with some of the most beautiful and quiet beaches in South Africa. Fig, mangrove and raffia-palm forests provide the greenery (it is the only place in South Africa with five mangrove species in one place). Within the estuary mouth, there’s excellent snorkelling. Note: stone fish are present here, so protect your feet if walking in the estuary.
Hippos, Zambezi sharks and some crocs are present in the lake system. More than 250 bird species have been identified here, including rare palmnut vultures.
There are two entrances to the park: at Kosi Bay Camp (7km north of KwaNgwanase) and Kosi Bay Mouth (19km north of KwaNgwanase). Only 4WDs can enter the access roads, although numbers are limited; permits are required to enter Kosi Bay Mouth. These must be arranged a day in advance by calling 035-592 0236 or through lodgings.
KwaNgwanase is the nearest service centre, some 10km west of the reserve, and you'll find shops and an ATM here.
