Although it was established in 1702 and has some of the oldest pinotage and shiraz vineyards in South Africa, Meerendal is no fuddy-duddy wine estate. The tasting room is very professionally run and combined with a cafe. There's also a pleasant seven-room boutique hotel, the contemporary-styled Crown restaurant, and 18km of mountain biking trails to explore.
The estate is the start or finish for the Cape Epic mountain biking race (www.cape-epic.com) held in March. They can also arrange horse riding, paragliding and guided walks on the estate.
