Hippos hadn’t lived in the marshes of this small, picturesque nature reserve for 300 years until they were reintroduced in 1981. There are eight hippos, but they’re shy and you're unlikely to spot them unless you stay overnight (R1050 for up to four people, self-catering). For details contact Imvubu Nature Tours , who also run one-hour guided walks (R400 per person, minimum 6 people), on which you can spot some 200 species of birds from the waterside trail, viewing towers and hides.
