The most impressive exhibit here explains how ashes taken from an ancient hearth in the Rose Cottage Cave , not far from Ladybrand, prove that humans first inhabited the area more than 55,000 years ago. Note that the museum was closed when we passed through. It usually keeps fairly erratic opening hours, but there were rumours of a renovation.
