Watersmeeting Nature Reserve, just outside town, protects the start of the Kowie River, where fresh and tidal waters meet. There’s birdwatching in the forests here, canoes can be hired for a 21km paddle down to Port Alfred, and there’s wildlife to watch out for – kudus, bushpigs and bushbucks – plus a nice view of Horseshoe Bend in the river. The road down to the river is steep and shouldn’t be attempted after rain.
