Hoedspruit Endangered Species Center

Hoedspruit Endangered Species Center takes wildlife preservation seriously. Visitors to this ecotourism and education landmark will walk away with a greater understanding of the challenges conservationists face in preventing extinction. The center’s impressive team of loyal employees and volunteers provide love, support and medical attention to some of Africa’s most rare, vulnerable and endangered species, like elephants, rhinos and cheetahs.

In addition to nursing injured animals back to health, HESC breeds endangered species, like the cheetah, and releases them into the wild. HESC promotes the education of students and travelers on important issues like wildlife preservation. Visitors can tour the grounds, where antelope, buffalo, white rhinos and lions are kept in semi-wild environments, and learn from resident experts exactly what it takes to prevent Big Five extinction.

Practical Info

HESC is located in the Limpopo Province, about a 4.5 hours drive from Johannesburg, near the Cheetah Project. It is open every day but Christmas from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Tours cost R130 for adults.
