Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Center

A trip to the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Center gets travelers up close to some of the continent’s fiercest animals—lions, leopards and even honey badgers. The center, which sits at the base of the Drakensberg escarpment, also helps visitors better understand the plight of endangered species in the African bush through education programs and informative guided tours.

Since 1991, wildlife experts and conservationists at Moholoholo have been nursing injured and poisoned wildlife back to health, rescuing animal orphans and facilitating successful breading programs to help increase numbers in the wild. In addition to rehabilitation programs, Moholoholo also coordinates animal control efforts in farm areas, by relocating “problem” animals to more open spaces and hosts a permanent residence for animals too hurt or injured to ever return to the wild.

Visitors can spend a few hours learning about the center’s conservation efforts and viewing the animals before heading to the nearby Forest Camp, an impressive reserve at the northeastern side of the Lowveld Drakensberg Mountains, where some 300 bird species and rare Samango monkeys live.

Moholoholo is located in the Limpopo Province about 18 kilometers east of Blyde River Canyon on R531 and entry costs R110 for adults and R50 for children over six. Tours take place twice daily at 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Check the calendar before booking, as the center is only open on Sundays during school holidays and long weekends.
