Under City Halls impressive dome is this gallery with a small but interesting collection of South African artworks, including paintings, mixed media and ceramics. It also has temporary and rotating exhibitions.

Kids Playground
Next to Green Point Lighthouse, this is an imaginatively constructed playground with a giant ship-shaped climbing frame. Nearby are other family friendly attractions including a maze and a miniature train ride.

Kwazulu Natal Society of Arts
This not-for-profit gallery has temporary exhibitions of modern art. Once you’ve perused the gallery, its outdoor cafe, set under shady trees, is a lovely place to visit. A gift shop is also within the complex.

University Museum
This fabulous Flemish renaissance-style building houses an interesting and varied collection of local art, an array of African anthropological treasures and exhibits on South African culture and history.

Starways Art Centre
Award-winning artist Anton van der Merwe exhibits pottery and paintings at this community arts centre. The atmospheric little theatre between the trees periodically hosts poetry readings and performances.

Nylsvley Nature Reserve
This 40-sq-km reserve, on the Nyl River floodplain, is one of the country’s best places to see birds (380 species are listed). The reserve, 20km south of Mookgophong, is signposted from Rte 101 to Modimolle.

National Cultural History Museum
Concentrating on the cultural history of South Africa, this museum features exhibitions on San rock art, Iron Age figurines from Limpopo and a small gallery of contemporary South African works, among others.

Emnambithi Cultural Centre
Emnambithi Cultural Centre includes a Cultural Museum , which features a township shack and cultural exhibits including traditional attire and beading. A tribute to Ladysmith Black Mambazo is also on display.

Thaba Kwena Crocodile Farm
This farm is home to more than 10,000 crocodiles, each reaching up to 5.5m in length. The beasts are bred for their skin and meat, which is exported worldwide. It’s just north of De Draai Gastehuis, 4km from Rte 101.

Afrikaans Language Museum
Paarl is considered the wellspring of the Afrikaans language, a fact covered by this interesting museum. It also shows, thanks to a multimedia exhibition, how three continents contributed to the formation of the language.

Fort Durnford
Fort Durnford , now a museum, was built in 1874 to protect Estcourt from Zulu attack. In 1914 it was a reformatory for 20 ‘naughty girls’. There are interesting displays and a reconstructed Zulu village at the gate.

Tokai Arboretum
This planting of 1555 different trees representing 274 species, begun in 1885 by Joseph Storr Lister, the conservator of forests for the Cape Colony, is the basis of the Tokai Forest, part of Table Mountain National Park.

VOC Vegetable Garden
Newly installed at the southern end of the Public Garden, but inspired by the original market garden laid out by Dutch settlers here over 350 years ago. Some of the food grown here is used in the gardens restaurant.

Martin Melck House
This handsome historic house (dating from 1783) is currently being used for various temporary exhibitions as well as, in the courtyard to the rear, the live jazz and restaurant venue Manenbergs @ The Camissa Courtyard .

Wolhuterskop Game & Nature Reserve
Just outside town is the Wolhuterskop Game & Nature Reserve , which has several species of antelope. There are horse trails and a one-night hiking route here. Book through the tourist information office in town.

John H Marsh Maritime Research Centre
A resource for those interested in South Africa’s maritime history. The main exhibition is about the ill-fated voyage of the Mendi , which sank in the English Channel in 1917 taking 607 black troops to a watery grave.

Eludzidzini Royal Residence
At the end of a palm-lined avenue south of Lobamba lies Eludzidzini, the queen mothers royal residence. Its not open to the public except during festivities, notably the Incwala ceremony or the umhlanga (reed) dance.

Hout Bay Museum
There’s little to detain you at this one-room museum next to the tourist office, with minor-league displays on local history. Contact the museum about the guided walks (R10 donation) that are sometimes run on the weekends.
