1820 Settlers National Monument
This monument to the hardy British settlers and their contributions to South Africa has stupendous views of the surrounding countryside, and contains artworks and a large theatre.

Phongolo Reserve
The Phongolo Reserve , an interesting site and a lovely area southeast of Phongolo, is backed by the Lebombo Range and encompasses a large lake, on which you can go boating.

Old House Museum
The Old House Museum is the restored home of Natal’s first prime minister. Although this is interesting, be aware that this is in a slightly isolated, less savoury part of town.

Stony Point African Penguin Colony
This is a much quieter place to watch the diminutive penguins than at the more famous Boulders Beach, across the other side of False Bay. The colony is at the western end of Betty’s Bay.

Fort Amiel
The Anglo-Boer and Anglo-Zulu War museum is in Fort Amiel , which was established in 1876 when the British anticipated conflict with the Boers. The delightful curator, Louis, knows the lot.

Central Garage Transport Museum
Illustrates the development of transport in the town from the 1870s to the 1950s. For classic-car enthusiasts. Admission includes entry to the House and Printing Museums and Dresden Store.

Olduvai
Beside the Cape Town International Convention Centre is this 8m-tall, red-painted statue of a man, a piece by Gavin Younge, and inspired by the Rift Valley and great lakes of East Africa.

Mission Rocks
About 14km north of the entrance, Mission Rocks is a rugged and rock-covered shoreline. At low tide you can view a fabulous array of sea life in the rock pools (note: you cannot swim here).

Lighthouse Museum
The Lighthouse Museum is in the lighthouse itself, which is the second-oldest in South Africa, built in 1848. Climb the 71 steps to the top for a bird’s-eye view of the meeting of the oceans.

Leeuwenhof
This estate is the official residence of the Premier of the Western Cape. In 2015 the front lawn of the estate was being temporary used for the Oranjezicht City Farms Saturday market.

Diggings Museum
Just east of town along the Graskop road is the open-air Diggings Museum, where you can see how gold was panned. You need to visit on a tour, arranged through the information centre.

Togryers’ Museum
Ceres was once a famous centre for making horse-drawn vehicles. Consequently, the museum has an interesting collection of original wagons and carriages alongside exhibits on local history.

Akkerendam Nature Reserve
North of town, this 275-sq-km reserve has one- and two-day hiking trails. The spring wildflower bloom carpets the mountainous terrain. Head to the municipal office for hiking permits.

Major Bell’s Tower
Leribes main sight is this crumbling tower near the market. It was built in 1879, and spent most of its career as a storehouse for government records. The tower is not open to visitors.

Printing Museum
The Printing Museum explores the history of printing in the town and has a collection of old presses. Admission includes entry to the House and Central Garage Transport Museums and Dresden Store.

Danger Point Lighthouse
Dating from 1895, the lighthouse is set in pretty grounds and has some information on the 1852 HMS Birkenhead shipwreck. The lighthouse is privately owned and opening times are not always observed.

Barberton Museum
Barberton Museum is looking a bit worse for wear these days, but it has interesting exhibits on local history and geology, including a great black-and-white photo display of the town through the years.

Goukamma Nature Reserve
This reserve is accessible from the Buffalo Bay road, and protects 14km of rocky coastline, sandstone cliffs, dunes covered with coastal fynbos and forest, and Groenvlei, a large freshwater lake.

Old Port Captains Office
This beautiful gabled building, dating from 1904, was built for the Port Captain, whose office was previously located in the Clock Tower across the cut in Alfred Basin. Its now occupied by shops.

Rocklands Beach
You can easily wade into the seas at this rocky beach at a kink in the Sea Point Promenade. Rest on the Art54 benches Promenade Pets, designed as blue seagulls, black sea lions and pink poodles.
