Between Quthing and Masitise, and visible from the main road, is Villa Maria Mission, with a striking, twin-spired sandstone church.

A well-preserved, 19th-century house with creaking wooden floors and a large collection of firearms, as well as historical photos.

Mt Tabor Lookout
About 4km before Mission Rocks is the Mt Tabor lookout (signed), which provides a wonderful view of Lake St Lucia and the Indian Ocean.

Mirrors has a magical 180-sq-m garden with a stone circle and labyrinth, a gallery of owner Kens landscape photography, and a crystal shop.

Echo Caves
Echo Caves are off Rte 36, where Stone Age relics have been found. The caves get their name from dripstone formations that echo when tapped.

Debengeni Falls
There are a number of waterfalls in the area, including the glorious Debengeni Falls, where a suspension bridge leads between pools.

The largest winery in the region is best known for its easy-drinking boxed wine. The restaurant (mains R50 to R100) serves standard fare.

This art museum specialises in South African art from throughout the country’s history. It also features regularly changing exhibitions.

This museum-house, occupying a picturesque cottage dating to 1827, evokes a settler familys life during the mid-Victorian period.

Kings Beach
Sandy central beach, popular for sunbathing and swimming in the shallows. Stick to the shallows when swimming; the current is very strong.

Fugitives Drift
About 10km from Rorke’s Drift is Fugitive’s Drift. Two British soldiers were killed here while attempting to rescue the Queen’s Colours.

Within the Boulders area of Table Mountain National Park, this is the beach where the colony of African penguins like to hang out.

This landmark 19th-century church, one of South Africa’s finest examples of Victorian Gothic architecture, stands in the towns main square.
