Victoria Falls

The enormous Victoria Falls on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe is a popular stop for many people visiting South Africa.The falls are often called the “world’s largest waterfall,” but that name can be deceptive. It’s not the widest nor the tallest in the world, but when the width and height are combined, they create the largest sheet of falling water.
Added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1989, the falls were once called Mosi-oa-Tunya, a local name meaning the smoke that thunders. This was before explorer David Livingstone arrived in 1855 and named them after the Queen of England.
Visiting Victoria Falls in the rainy season means that there is much more water falling over the edge, creating an incredibly impressive view (not to mention the loud roar that comes along with it). The drawback of a winter visit is the heavy mist that is created from the water hitting the river below, as it often blocks the view of the falls in the same way that fog does.
The falls can be visited from either the Zambian or Zimbabwean side, but because most of the falls actually are in Zambia, better views are seen from Zimbabwe. It’s not something you can do in a quick day trip from Johannesburg, but it’s certainly possible to see Victoria Falls on a brief side-trip from Johannesburg, which is what many travelers do.
