This small, 19th-century mosque is a typical brick structure that fits harmoniously with the architecture of MF Axundzadə pr, looking especially attractive when uplit at night.

Şәkis foremost mosque dates from the 18th-century and sports a standalone 28m brick minaret. Since 2015 the structure has been somewhat overshadowed by a new hotel construction site.

Şixov Beach
The nearest beach to central Baku, is most fascinating for photographers who want to snap bathers gambolling on the ‘sand’ with a romantic backdrop of giant offshore oil rigs.

Günbəzli Hamam
This 18th-century brick hamam -ruin has a distinctive beehive dome but lies decrepit and forgotten on a street that has several patches of archetypal old-Quba architecture.

The citys most appealing street has been recently beautified with attractive sculptures and restored housefronts on a succession of brick buildings, which date mostly from around 1900.

Archangel Michael Russian Church
The modest Archangel Michael Russian Church is the centre of Baku’s Orthodox community. It’s not geared towards tourists, but you’re welcome to admire the icons and colourful ceiling murals.

There are several commercial mini-galleries in the old city (all with free admission). The most imaginative include Qız Qalası , Center of Contemporary Art and Ali Shamsir’s Gallery .

Təzə Pir Mosque
It was built between 1903 and 1914 but a recent renovation has added gilding to its minaret tips and stone cladding to the surrounding buildings, which house the Centre for Islam in the Caucasus .

Lighthouse Tower
Still functioning as a lighthouse despite being set well inland beyond the train station, this whitewashed structure is similarly shaped to Stalins prison, formed of two concentric cylinders.

City Hall
Gəncəs central square is dominated by the arcade-fronted City Hall, a powerful example of Stalinist architecture that contrasts with the tree-shaded 17th-century mosque at the squares southern end.

Xəzər Stadium
Just across the river from the town centre, the Xəzər Stadium is home to the local premier-league football team, which was managed during 2013 by John Toshack, better known as a star of the 1970s Liverpool squad.

Nizami Mausoleum
East of town is the 1991 Nizami Mausoleum , a space shuttle–shaped tomb-tower flanked by a series of inspired sculptures depicting scenes from Nizami’s works. A vast aluminium smelter forms an incongruous backdrop.

Armenian Church of St Gregory the Illuminator
The sturdy shell of this 1887 stone church remains disused for lack of Armenians, a reminder of the brutal cultural divide still caused by the war in Karabakh. The structure was partially restored in 2004.
