Pailins market is a good place to chow down on street food. A few stalls here still sell rubies and sapphires (many of inferior quality).

Mondap
This building once housed richly decorated sacred texts written on palm leaves (now moved to the safety of air-conditioned storage).

Elephant & Tigers Statue
The small statue of an elephant and tigers marks the beginning of central Kompong Thom (if youre arriving into town from the south).

Wat Preah Inkosei
This wat, north of town, is built on the site of an early Angkorian brick temple, which still stands today at the rear of the compound.

Royal Treasury
In the days before the reconstruction of the Silver Pagoda, this small building housed some of the royal treasures that were not on display.

Building with Elephant Dock
This small structure was used by the king and other royal family members to mount and dismount the royal elephants for royal ceremonies.

Kouprey Roundabout
This roundabout includes a statue of the kouprey, a wild cow that was once the national animal of Cambodia (but is now believed to be extinct).

Sammaki Gallery
Battambangs original contemporary art gallery, focused on promoting the work of local young artists. Supported by the Cambodian Childrens Trust.

Provincial Museum
The brand-new Provincial Museum, built in the style of a Khmer temple, is supposed to open its exhibits on local archaeology and culture in 2008.

Popokvil Falls
From the Thansur Bokor Highland Resort, the road heads north to two-tiered Popokvil Falls, which are at their most impressive from July to October.

Golden Lions Roundabout
The highly garish and impossible to miss Golden Lions Roundabout sits at the top of the hill where Serendipity Beach Rd heads down to the sea.

Angkor Thom Victory Gate
One of two gates in the eastern walls of Angkor Thom, the Victory Gate was used by the Khmer kings of old upon their successful return from battle.

Angkor Thom East Gate
The east gate of Angkor Thom was used as a location in Tomb Raider , where the bad guys broke into the ‘tomb’ by pulling down a giant (polystyrene!) apsara .

Prasat Preah Thkol
In the centre of Preah Khans baray is Prasat Preah Thkol (known by locals as Mebon), an island temple similar in style to the Western Mebon at Angkor.

Wat Thmei
Wat Thmei has a small memorial stupa containing the skulls and bones of victims of the Khmer Rouge. It also has plenty of young monks eager to practise their English.
