Great Wall at Huangya Pass
The Great Wall at Huangya Pass is located in a mountainous area north of Tianjin in Ji County, approximately 100 kilometers east of Beijing. The Huangya Pass was first built during the Northern Qi Dynasty, then rebuilt during the Ming Dynasty, with repair and restoration works taking place in the mid-1980s.
As a lesser-known part of the Great Wall, the Huangya Pass is not nearly as busy as other popular parts, yet the views are simply spectacular, with the entire section built on a mountain ridge. Watch towers, drain holes, emplacements, barracks, and other military defense systems are arranged along the wall, while the Great Wall Museum and Statue of Qi Jiguang can also be found in the area.
Another major attraction near this section of the Great Wall is the Taiping Mountain Stronghold, which is located six miles northwest of the Huangya Pass itself.
Practical Info
To reach the Great Wall at Huangya Pass from Beijing, take a bus from the Sihui Long Distance Bus Station to Jixian County. From there, it’s easy (and affordable) to take a minibus to the Huangya Pass.
Visitors should be aware that there are a large number of steep steps to climb when exploring this section of the Great Wall.
