Shanghai Grand Theater
Located in People’s Square in the middle of the city, the Shanghai Grand Theater is the crown of the city’s arts scene. Designed by ARTE Charpentier, a celebrated French architecture firm, the building combines a mixture of Eastern and Western styles, and inside, the theater is appointed with elegant marble flooring and a large crystal chandelier.
The theater has three parts, the 1,800-seat Lyric Theater, renowned for its sound quality, a 600-seat drama theater and a small 300-seat studio theater. Since opening in 1998, Shanghai Grand Theater has held over 6,000 musical performances including The Three Tenors, The Lion King and concerts by top symphony orchestras from around the world. There’s something going on here nearly every night of the week, so check the schedule when you arrive in Shanghai.
Shanghai Grand Theater also holds some of the city’s most important arts events including the Shanghai International Film Festival in June and the China Shanghai International Arts Festival in October.
