A 2km walk from the Sōngyáng Academy, the attractive Sōngyuè Pagoda (嵩岳塔, Sōngyuè Tǎ; admission ¥40), built in AD 509, is China’s oldest brick pagoda. Nearby is the Fǎwáng Temple (法王寺, Fǎwáng Sì), ringed by mountains and first established in AD 71. Most visitors, however, come here to ascend Mt Tàishì. To begin the climb, look for the large stone path just beyond the Sōngyáng Academy. The challenging climb up stone steps takes three to four hours (one way).
The 1470m-high Junji Peak (峻极峰, Jùnjí Fēng) is little more than a viewing point.
