A hike through Mùkēng’s bamboo forest, 5km northeast of Hóngcūn, is an excellent diversion. Remember Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’s breathtaking bamboo-top fight scenes? Yep, they were filmed here. The two-hour circuit along a ridgeline leads past the top-heavy plumes of feathery bamboo, trickling streams and hillside tea gardens, past a small village where you can get a filling meal and a clean room with bathroom for ¥60 to ¥120, and eventually to a small hamlet. A zipline can take you down in 40 seconds.
