There are three old residences in Tónglǐ that you’ll pass at some point and the most pleasant is this elegant and composed Ming-dynasty estate with 52 halls spread out over five courtyards in the west of town. The buildings have been elaborately restored and redecorated with paintings, calligraphy and antique furniture while the black-brick faced paths, osmanthus trees and cooling corridors hung with mǎdēng lanterns (traditional Chinese lanterns) conjure up an alluring charm.
