Photogenic Měi Shè was built out of the rough gray volcanic stone so prevalent in this part of Hǎinán. Wander the quiet back alleys and gawp at the castle-like five-storey gun tower in the centre of town. It was built in the 1920s to protect the village from bandits.
A taxi (about ¥60 from Hǎikǒu) is the best way to get here, unless you’ve got a bike and a very good map. It’s a 15-minute drive from the Hǎikǒu Volcanic Cluster Geopark entrance.
