China's leading panda conservation centre, Wòlóng Nature Reserve, 140km northwest of Chéngdū, suffered devastating damage in the 2008 Sìchuān earthquake. It continues to do ground-breaking work, successfully releasing a male panda born in captivity into the wild in 2013, but the reserve is still closed indefinitely to the public and roads from Chéngdū are in poor condition.
