On the southern part of the Boulevard, known as the New Boulevard, an ornamental lake hosts the Dancing Fountains, an entertaining laser, music and water show.

Dzveli Diklo
About 2km past Diklo, which is 4km northeast of Shenaqo, the Old Diklo fortress perches on a spectacular rock promontory looking east to Dagestan (Russia).

Ethnographic Museum
The Ethnographic Museum has a superb collection of gold, silver and wooden icons and crosses dating back to the 12th century from Ushguli’s seven churches.

Residence of the Catholicos
Opposite the small, leafy (but closed) park Erekle II moedani, high walls hide the residence of the Catholicos-Patriarch, head of the Georgian Orthodox Church.

Adjara Arts Museum
Well displayed and lit, the collection covers Georgian art including works by Pirosmani and Akhvlediani, as well as 19th- and 20th-century European and Russian painting.

Teliani Valley
On the Tbilisi road between Telavi and Tsinandali, Teliani Valley is a recently updated operation with a modern on-site guest house where wine tours are offered.

Colchis Fountain
The central square, Tsentraluri moedani, focuses on the large ornamental Colchis Fountain, adorned with large-scale copies of the famous gold jewellery from Vani.

Government House
Numerous Sukhumi buildings still stand empty or ruined, including landmarks such as the old Government House on ploshchad Svobody (gutted when the Abkhaz took the city in September 1993).

Tavisuplebis Moedani
This busy traffic nexus was Lenin Sq in Soviet times. Georgia’s last Lenin statue, toppled in 1990, stood where the golden St George (a gift to the city from its sculptor, Zurab Tsereteli) now spears his dragon.

Tbilisi State University
The elegant, neoclassical main building of Tbilisi State University, Georgia’s biggest educational institution, stands near the start of Chavchavadzis gamziri. It was built in 1906 as a school for the nobility.

Naberezhnaya Makhadzhirov
Strung with pretty parks, part-derelict jetties, cafes and kitschy souvenir stalls, and fronted by stretches of stony beach, Sukhumis 3km-long seafront promenade swarms with happy crowds during the summer holiday months.

Samtavro Church
This large church, now part of a nunnery, was built in the 1130s. King Mirian and Queen Nana are buried in its southwest corner, under a stone canopy. The little church in the grounds, Tsminda Nino, dates back to the 4th century.

Khertvisi Fortress
This impressive 10th- to 14th-century fortress perches on a rocky crag above the meeting of the Paravani and Mtkvari Rivers, 45km southeast of Akhaltsikhe where the Vardzia road diverges from the main road to Akhalkalaki and Armenia.

Novy Afon Monastery
The multi-gold-domed Novy Afon Monastery, founded by Russian monks in the 1870s, stands out on the hillside, about a 15-minute walk up from the main road. Its cathedral, often thronged with worshippers, has wonderfully colourful murals.

Sighnaghi Museum
This well-displayed, modern museum has good exhibits on Kakheti archaeology and history, and a room of 16 paintings by the great Kakheti-born artist Pirosmani – the biggest collection of his work after the National Gallery in Tbilisi.

Twins Old Cellar
A family-run operation making qvevri and European wine, 23km north of Telavi. Visits include its comprehensive qvevri wine museum and tasting of three wines and one chacha . It also has a small hotel overlooking vineyards, and a restaurant.
