For a taste of Mandvi’s past glory, call Dilip Asher, a chess instructor who is a loveable character and descendant of the town’s once-richest merchant family. If he’s around, he will give you an informal tour of his family's home, where he still lives with his sister who is blind. The house has definitely seen better days, but the Portuguese tiles, ceiling murals and other artworks – along with a dilapidated 1932 Chevrolet – still have a touch of magic.
Donations help with the much needed upkeep of the house.
