Thirteen kilometres from Palampur on the Mandi road, a side road leads 1km north to Tashijong village, centred on the impressive Tashijong Gompa, founded by lamas from Tibet's important Khampagar Monastery who fled to India in the 1950s. It's home to about 150 Drukpa Kagyud (Red Hat) monks and is the focus for a lay Tibetan population of around 400. Visitors can see several mural-filled prayer halls and a carpet-making, thangka -painting and wood-carving cooperative.
