At the East Wing , owned by the Pereira-Braganza family, descendants of the other half of the family, is not quite as grand. Paint peels from windows; ceilings sag; antiques are mixed in willy-nilly with a jumble of cheap knick-knacks and seaside souvenirs. The only high point here is the small family chapel, which contains a carefully hidden fingernail of St Francis Xavier, and even this – the chapel, not the fingernail – is beginning to show signs of neglect.
