High on the ridge above Yuksom, this atmospheric gompa (its name means 'hermit’s cell') is set in beautifully tended gardens behind three coarsely hewn stupas. Established in 1701, it is said to be Sikkim’s oldest monastery, though the current chapel looks much newer.
Start the steep 40-minute climb from upper Yuksom’s primary health centre; the clear path rises through thickets of trumpet lilies and some lovely mature forest.
