On the northwestern side of town, about 1km from Nehru Bazaar, is Birdi Chand Well, surmounted by four imposing minarets (two minarets generally symbolise the presence of a step-well), which are covered in fading paintings. As water is such a precious commodity in the desert, wells were sacred, and it’s common to see a temple at a well – there’s a small one here devoted to Hanuman (the Hindu monkey god).
