Armenian Church

Built in 1712, the Armenian Church of Chennai is one of India’s oldest churches. Its classic white exterior, curved archway and quiet altar were originally built to accommodate Armenian merchants who trekked through the Hindukush Mountains to sell rich silks and rare spices.
While few—if any—of this distinct class of people still reside here, the church remains a destination for travelers seeking out a unique look at Chennai’s past. Each Sunday, the six bells in the structure’s historic belfry are rung, sending a distinct and beautiful call to worship into the village and neighboring hillsides.
