Bharatpur

A fortress city in Rajasthan, Bharatpur was founded in the 18th century when it was ruled by the Jat people. According to legend, the city's name derives from Bharat, the brother of Lord Rama, who was one of the incarnations of Vishnu. Today it is most famous for its proximity to the Keoladeo National Park (Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary,), an important stop on many migratory bird paths across Asia.  
Visiting the city is a way to access the city’s history and cultural heritage. It was founded by Maharaja Suraj Mal in 1733, who built the Lohagarh Fort that still stands today. It is also called the “Iron Fort” and is known to be one of the strongest in India. There are also monuments and towers to commemorate victories in battle, and other temples and palaces throughout the city are also worth a visit.

Practical Info

Bharatpur is accessible by rail, car and bus from the neighboring cities of Delhi and Jaipur. The rail station, BTE Jn., is on the main Delhi to Mumbai line, as well as the Bandikui to Agra Fort line.
