Chor Bazaar

Amid the crowded streets and crumbling buildings of the market area in South Mumbai, one of the largest and busiest flea markets in India has been trading for 150 years. Chor Bazaar literally translates as ‘Thieves Market” in Hindi and Marathi, although this name only came about as a result of the British’s mispronunciation of the original name, ‘Shor’, meaning ‘noise’. Having said that, the market developed quite the reputation for selling stolen goods over the years, with local legend promising that if you lost anything in Mumbai you could always buy it back later at Chor Bazaar!
Today, the market is a bustling hub of bargaining for and buying second-hand goods. Here you can find everything from vintage furniture and Victorian antiques to old car parts and Bollywood film posters. Mutton Street leads past all the main stores in Chor Bazaar, giving visitors the chance to rummage through the wares on offer and haggle with the vendors.

Chor Bazaar is located on Mutton Street, near Mohammad Ali Road in south Mumbai. The closest railway station is Grant Road. The shops in Chor Bazaar are open from 11am until 7:30pm every day except Friday (Muslim prayer day). Bear in mind that the area is a conservative Muslim area, so visitors should dress appropriately in loose clothing that covers the legs and shoulders.
