Sajjangarh Palace (Monsoon Palace)

The Sajjangarh Palace, perched on the Aravalli hillside of Udaipur, provides a high viewpoint over the city and the two nearby lakes, which means it’s no surprise that this is a favorite spot to watch the sun rise and set over the surrounding countryside.
Named after the Maharana who constructed it in 1884, today the palace is also known as Monsoon Palace, as it was originally built to watch the clouds that pass during monsoon season. The site was originally designed as an astrological center but was not completed as such due to the early passing of the Maharaja. The Mewar royal family also once used this palace as a hunting lodge.  It was later famously used as a set in the James Bond film Octopussy.
Standing nine stories tall, the palace is constructed of white marble and intricately carved with flower and plant designs. It becomes illuminated with dozens of glowing lights at night, and Lake Pichola lies about 1,100 feet below. 

Practical Info

Sajjangarh Palace can be seen on the hillside from Udaipur.  It located three miles (5 km) from the city and is accessed by a winding road, on which auto rickshaws are not allowed. The site is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and admission costs 80 Indian Rupees for foreigners.
